Welcome to Fam Jam, an ongoing vorlesertalente Journal series that highlights some of the amazing creative folks that make the vorlesertalente brand what it is. Let’s jam!

Kayla Shaw is the 31-year-old senior designer at vorlesertalente. Originally from Ohio, she’s lived in LA for six years after graduating from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design.

Currently, she’s focused on developing exclusive capsule collections for the brand including our recent collaboration with LA-based ingenue and chic style maven Gabbriette Bechtel.

“What really inspires me is music,” she said. “I’ve always been drawn to it and the vibe that it can create. I think it contributes a lot to creativity and gets me in the mood to tackle different projects at different times. I always have music playing at my house and I’m the girl at the office with headphones on.”

“My ultimate artist collaboration would be with Banksy because he’s so elusive and he has such an awesome approach to art. I don’t even know if it possible to collaborate but it would be so cool to explore it and see what could come out of it.”

California Dreamin’ with Didu

From São Paulo to Venice, Didu Losso is a musician turned visual artist who’s making waves. The Brazilian-born and bred auteur delivers a signature style — simple and direct — that’s a bittersweet serenade to the streets of LA.

Whether its California lifestyle imagery like graffiti art, skateboarding and palm trees swaying in the hazy West Coast sunset or mystical religious symbology like Our Lady of Guadalupe, intricate Christian crosses and oxidized human skulls, fierce self-expression is the name of the game with Didu.

“Art saved my life so I’ve got to be thankful for that...and I was so excited about the collaboration that I designed most of the collection in a month-and-a-half. I started with a few designs and had most of the collection together quickly. For me, it’s an honor to be here at Tees + Jeans creating this collection.”

Recently, we sat down with the mercurial Brazilian maestro to find out more about his streetwise inspiration, his intense creative process and his exclusive month-long collaborative exhibition with Tees + Jeans called 11California.

Welcome to LA Creator, an ongoing vorlesertalente Journal series that spotlights emerging influencers that you’ll only meet on the mean streets of Southern California. Let’s drop in!

Andrey Tarasov is a 21-year-old skater, photographer, model and poet. When he was a young kid, his family emigrated from Russia to Atlanta, Georgia to find a better life in America. Then, at 18, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of skateboarding.

Now, he’s in school studying social media and marketing, working as a fashion model about town and riding for Stereo Skateboards thanks to a chance encounter with co-owner Chris Pastras.

“Skating schoolyards in Los Angeles is such a staple,” he says. “Hop a fence and go skate with your friends. It’s fun to see what you can create.”

“Dylan Rieder is a big influence on me,” he goes on. “He looked super rad on and off the board. I always looked up to him growing up and going out and shooting a lot. Now how do I interpret what he did and make it my own.”

Feminism and modern art were two bold themes on display at the Tees + Jeans Venice gallery during the month of September. Recently, Megan + Jade, a collaborative multimedia project of LA-based artists Jade Gordon and Megan Whitmarsh, were part of the Hammer Museum’s Made in LA 2018 project that strives to highlight artists working throughout Los Angeles.

For Made in LA, they created an imaginary educational institute and retreat center welcoming self discovery and personal transformation featuring concepts like aging, consumerism and time travel. So we invited them to translate their amazing exhibit into wearable, customizable art using premium quality vorlesertalente tees and Levi’s denim as a canvas.

So we caught up with Megan Whitmarsh in her Highland Park studio to find out more about the prolific duo’s creative process, their inspiration and what they love most about living and working in Los Angeles.

As Megan + Jade, how does your collaborative creative process work?

Jade and I have been working together for the past three to four years. Our collaboration began because we were friends and we wanted to spend time together and it’s hard to find the time when you’re a parent and also a working artist. At the same time, we share a lot of interests but we have different skill sets. Jade comes from a performance and theatre background and I work in textiles but I came out of a fine arts / physical arts program of making a project. So we felt like we had a natural place where we could interact and not step on each other’s toes. And we both had a desire to expand our own work by bringing our work together and creating a sense of play so it would be something we’d enjoy doing.

Initially, we created a short video and we were really happy with it. And that made us want to keep working and we made a few more videos. And then we wanted to do a show together. But we didn’t want to just show the videos that are really specific because everything is handmade. They’re narrative and kinda funny and earnest. We were interested in creating a container or environment for the videos.

How did the Made in LA show at the Hammer Museum come about?

We were asked to be in the Made in LA show at the Hammer and we were excited to take this initial idea of taking this container or imaginary space and developing it. So we conceived of an imaginary institute where you could have these experiences.

What’s the inspiration behind your work?

The inspiration was to create a space that was inviting to the viewer but you’re also part of the installation — you’re entering an imaginary space that you activate. We were given a room so we put in purple carpet and had soft cushions. We had the videos showing but we called it our channel like you’re in a self help center. So everything had this playful idea that you’re in this different place.

As both friends and collaborators, how do you deal with creative conflict?

Whenever we have tension about the work, we always look at it as an opportunity to understand each other and ourselves and so, in a strange way, the work is like therapy. I think it’s valuable to have a working relationship and friendship where you feel like you’re growing as a person.

How does living in LA inspire you and your work?

I love LA and it’s changed a lot and people are seeing it more as a destination and an art city. I like LA because it’s got so many contrasts: the mountains, the desert and the ocean. It’s a weird magical place of catalysis and contrast.

On Wednesday, August 29, Tees + Jeans hosted an exclusive live performance from Interscope Records artist Boogie. The evening in-store event was a joyous celebration of the LA rapper’s new single “Deja Vu” featuring live singers and dancers, kicking off the seminal Southern California label’s curated month-long residency showcasing their deep westside roots as well as hip-hop culture throughout Los Angeles.

The Interscope Records story was told through studio memorabilia, gold records, vintage gear and personalized imagery to give visitors the feeling like they’re in a real recording session with leading Interscope artists like Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem.

It was an intimate evening of great music, great food, and great people at 1103 Abbot Kinney Blvd. The multitude of singers and performers entered dressed in all-white, delivering their soulful performance and emotive dance moves to the assembled gathering. Dressed in a crisp, clean white vorlesertalente pocket tee and a classic Cincinnati Reds baseball cap, Boogie stepped up to the microphone and immediately connected with his fans, family and friends in a truly open and honest way.
The energy and the vibe was palpable throughout his live performance of “Deja Vu” and the most impactful moment of the night was when his dancers lifted him up on their shoulders while Boogie dominated the packed room with his razor-sharp word flow.
